Infrastructure

The City of Martinsville and Henry County, Virginia are served by two primary transportation links. Route 58 runs from Virginia Beach to Bristol, passing through the region and providing access from east to west across the entire southern portion of the state. Route 220 links Martinsville and Henry County with Roanoke to the north and Greensboro, North Carolina to the south.

There are several large trucking firms located here, and many industrial sites are served by Norfolk Southern railroad. There is a medium sized airport at Spencer, with major airports located within an hours drive at Roanoke and Greensboro, North Carolina.

Patrick Henry Community College serves Martinsville and Henry County. They have a variety of vocational and academic programs. They grant certificates, diplomas and two year degrees. This college is reasonably priced, providing a good, quality education without bankrupting students.

The area also has a branch of the National Business College and provides computer training through the Computer Learning Center, located in Bassett, Virginia.

Nearby large four year schools are Virginia Tech, at Blacksburg, Ferrum College at Ferrum, Virginia and Averett College in Danville, Virginia.

Electrical service is provided to Henry County by American Electric Power. Martinsville has a power generating station and serves as the electrical service provider for the city. Martinsville operates a landfill, and provides residential trash pickup. The City also has two large facilities for water and wastewater treatment. They are sized for industrial use. The Henry County PSA operates water and wastewater plants in the county.

Telephone service to the area is provided by SPRINT. They can provide T1, T3 and ISDN services to corporations requesting them. The City of Martinsville is connected through fiber optic cable to the internet, to local schools and libraries, and interdepartmentally. Martinsville is an "electronic village."

The Martinsville and Henry County region of Virginia, is an area of great potential. It is, first of all, a community of diversity, where people of different faiths, races and ethnic backgrounds work together to solve common problems and to achieve common goals. It is very much a working class region. Often persons of considerable means point with pride to their start in life as a mill hand or factory worker. Residents are friendly and hospitable, but they are not pretentious people. They tend to say what they mean, and mean what they say. There is an entrepreneurial spirit at work among the residents, and it is not unusual to find small businesses starting operation based on an individual's ideas and his willingness to take a risk in implementing them. This is a good place to live, a place with a future.

Martinsville and Henry County are served by both paid and volunteer fire and rescue squads. Martinsville and Henry County operate separate police departments and have independent courts. There are many areas of cooperation, however, particularly with schools, utilities and social services.
